Barons Court Stained Glass retoration

This pair of slim stained glass panels had been quite extensively patched up in the past - and finally needed removal and complete rebuilding with new lead.  A lot of the ill-matching and ill-fitting glass that has been patched in over the years was replaced with glass more sympathetic to the original.

The small circular centre pieces, which had not suffered damage, are quite unusual, made from red flashed glass (clear glass with a very thin layer of coloured glass on one surface), which had been cut back in places to show clear elements, some of which had then been stained yellow.  The glass had also been painted. Apologies for poor photo!

Blackheath stained glass rebuild

stained glass BlackheathThis panel had been repaired on at least 2 previous occasions, and this time the glass had separated from the lead in a number of places.  It was taken apart, some new glass cut to replace particularly ill-fitting pieces from the previous work, and rebuilt with new lead.  On installation a new horizontal support bar was fitted, and the panel secured to this with tie-wires.

Stained Glass restoration SE23

Stained glass SE23The 2 side panels had both sustained damaged over the years, and the main leaded glass door panel was quite mobile, with a number of cracked pieces.  All 3 were removed and replaced by 6.4mm thick laminated safety glass.  The side panels were partially rebuilt (the damage was localised to the bottom part), but the larger panel was completely taken apart, the glass cleaned, and then rebuilt with new lead replacing the cracked pieces of glass.  New steel support bars were fitted.

Balham leaded light front door

stained glass door panels BalhamThe openings in the door had been ‘blinded’ – filled in with wooden panels, leaving the hall very dull.  They were removed, replaced with laminated safety glass (for security), and new leaded glass panels made, to a design common in the street.

Stained glass restoration Croydon

Some real stained glass! This is the second of this series of very traditional painted, stained and etched glass panels in a large1930s house in Croydon.  Over the years it had become very concave (in effect blown inwards into the room) with gaps between the glass and the lead, and generally ready to break and fall apart.  We removed the panel from the metal frames, rebuilt it with new lead and refitted.

Lewisham leaded light repairs

Stained glass LewishamPart of a number of stained glass repairs and restorations we were commissioned to complete by the main contractor maintaining a number of housing association properties.  This particular panel, which was not original to the door – which had been modified to enable it to fit, was in a very poor state, and was partly rebuilt and fitted behind a panel of laminated safety glass.

The design for these new leaded light door panels was copied from one of the neighbouring houses, although this may not have been the original.  They replaced plain, obscured glass.
