Forest Hill, SE23 - glass restoration

One of the 2 main panels of leaded glass in this door had suffered damage, so it was removed, taken apart and rebuilt, replacing the broken glass.  Since it was not old we were able to source glass from our own stock, matching that used originally, to replace the broken pieces.

Restored stained glass door panel, Brockley

This panel had begun to come loose and a couple of pieces were cracked.  It was removed, the opening secured and the panel rebuilt with new lead, replacing the broken glass.  An 8mm diameter steel support bar is fitted into the frame, and the panel tied to this with copper wires to provide support – this was missing from the original installation.

New stained glass, Forest Hill - Honor Oak

Clearly something had to be done here!  We made a new panel to a slight modification of the original design.  The hammered glass used in the original and the top panel hasn't been made for some years, but the material we used here, although not the same, does work quite well in blending with the original in the top.

The 2 side panels had both sustained damaged over the years, and the main leaded glass door panel was quite mobile, with a number of cracked pieces.  All 3 were removed and replaced by 6.4mm thick laminated safety glass.  The side panels were partially rebuilt (the damage was localised to the bottom part), but the larger panel was completely taken apart, the glass cleaned, and then rebuilt with new lead replacing the cracked pieces of glass.  New steel support bars were fitted.

Stained glass door panel, Forest Hill, SE23

The middle pieces of this circle had come out of the lead and were at some risk of dropping out. Three out of 4 of the border pieces were damaged. The panel was removed and the space boarded over. After disassembly, we cut new glass to replace the 3 broken pieces, and since we were unable to exactly match the glass, a 4th piece was also cut out to provide a matching set. The panel was rebuilt with new lead, and fitted with 2 vertical retaining bars (not present originally), aligned with the leads, and secured to the panel with tie-wires – this should contribute to the durability of the panel.

Stained glass, Forest Hill, SE23

This quite unusual shaped stained glass door panel has become very loose and at risk of collapsing.  After removal, we made a template from the opening to ensure the rebuilt panel would fit!  The leaded panel was taken apart and salvaged, matching glass cut to replace the broken pieces.  The panel was reamde with new lead and fitted with vertical support rods.

New leaded panels - Forest Hill, SE23

Age and careless decorators had combined to make the originals of these 3 new panels past saving. Their owner removed them and also made a template to enable us to copy the original pattern and make up a new set, which he fitted. Supplied in December 2010

Leaded top light - Honor Oak, SE23

To complement the clients' new lighting, this sea/sky panel using mainly Corella and Spectrum Waterglass, with a deliberate mixture of lead widths replaced a plain glass panel above the front door. The old glass was removed and a double glazed sealed unit installed in the opening. The new leaded panel was then fitted next to this, and secured with new beading.
