Stained glass house number fanlight – ‘Ealing Rose’

Stained glass with house numberModeled on the pattern of the ersatz stained glass triple glazed ‘ealing rose’ units that are around, this is a traditionally made panel with number.   The number isn’t simply painted - its made from white flashed glass - clear glass with a very thin layer of white opal glass fused onto one side when it was made. The white flash is then sandblasted away to form the actual numerals, and then filled with a permanent black resin.

House number in stained glass

Stained glass house number SW19
Stained glass house number SW19
The original opening casement was removed to increase the area available for the new leaded glass panel, which was designed to complement the existing glass in the door.  It seemed wasteful to dump the wooden casement, so it was stripped and a hanging, shelved mirror created to fill the space - upcycling!.

Leaded Lights, Wimbledon

One of the larger panels to the left side of this door was damaged, and we removed and rebuilt it replacing the broken pieces of glass.  The panel in the door had become very loose, with a few cracks.  It was made up of glass not sympathetic  to the surrounding pieces, so we copied the pattern and made a new panel with more closely matching glass.

Wimbledon Stained glass

Wimbledon stained glass
We were asked to reproduce this pattern for our client, taken from similar houses locally.  The job included removing the ‘wire-cast’ glass panels that had been fitted in the past, and replacing them with 6.4mm thick laminated safety glass, for security.  We had to increase the depth of the rebates in the door by machining with a router to enable the laminated glass and the new stained glass panel to be fitted properly.  The uncoloured and amber glass are English Muffle.  The new work was then fitted behind the laminated glass and secured with beading

Stained glass door and side window– Merton Park

stained glass Merton Park
The stained glass in the door was badly deteriorated, and not very special, and the side panel had been lost.  Our client particularly wanted a blue glass border, and the use of the paler blue and pink in the centre of the panels adds interest.  Most of the glass is English Muffle, with detail in Waterglass, and rough rolled.
