We’d made and fitted the pair of higher level panels on the left of this (rather fuzzy) photo in 2010, and our clients came back for the door panels to be based on the same idea. These are fitted with quite hefty support bars, although their alignment with the horizontal lead lines means they aren’t particularly apparent.

Leaded glass panels, Bromley

These 2 new blue-bordered panels were supplied after one of the original plain leaded lights was damaged – since the glass could not be matched exactly, both panels were replaced.

Care was taken to ensure the central vertical lead lines aligned with those in the top panels. 12mm wide 'round' profile lead was used throughout, with internal reinforcing steel strips.

Stained glass door panel, Forest Hill, SE23

The middle pieces of this circle had come out of the lead and were at some risk of dropping out. Three out of 4 of the border pieces were damaged. The panel was removed and the space boarded over. After disassembly, we cut new glass to replace the 3 broken pieces, and since we were unable to exactly match the glass, a 4th piece was also cut out to provide a matching set. The panel was rebuilt with new lead, and fitted with 2 vertical retaining bars (not present originally), aligned with the leads, and secured to the panel with tie-wires – this should contribute to the durability of the panel.

Leaded lights, Victoria, Westminster, SW1

There are amongst a set of 7 new leaded glass panels fitted in a newly refurbished apartment in Central London. We worked closely with the client, who was concerned to respect the nature of the building, on the patterns and choice of the glass, and with the contractors who were carrying out the re-modelling.

All the glass is uncoloured, the borders are in Waterglass and the octagons in Crystal Ice, both from Spectrum and the squares, etc in Corella from Wissmach

Stained glass panels. Peckham - Cherries

Our client had a clear idea of how she wanted these new leaded glass panels for a new door to look, and provided a simple sketch. We copied this, adjusting a little, and once this was approved we met to decide on the glass to be used.

Painted glass, Lewisham SE13

This traditionally pained and stained glass panel had sufferedconsiderable damage – including breakage and loss of 7 of the paintedpieces. We disassembled the panel,taking what was left of the painted fragments enabling them to be copied in thecontext of their neighbouring pieces.
The panel was then rebuilt with new lead and replacing theother cracked pieces from the border. It was reinstalled in the door with new supporting rods.

This quite unusual shaped stained glass door panel hasbecome very loose and at risk of collapsing. After removal, we made a template from the opening to ensure the rebuiltpanel would fit! The leaded panel wastaken apart and salvaged, matching glass cut to replace the broken pieces. The panel was reamde with new lead andfitted with vertical support rods.

Obscured leaded glass door panel, Streatham

We and our client worked hard to get to this design, tocompliment the monochrome house frontage and the local ‘look’, and to provideminimum transparency in the glass, at the same time providing visual interest.

The glasses used were 'Crystal Ice' from Spectrum - in the hexagons, a 'small Flemish' - in the 4 main squares and the centre, and Corella for the border.

8mm wide lead is used throughout.

This panel was part of a number of package of glass work ina major refurbishment project. Therewas some cracked glass in the panel, and it has become quite loose, as thecement securing the glass in the lead had deteriorated with age. It was removed, disassembled and rebuiltwith new lead, replacing the broken glass. At the same time it was decided to insert a traditionally executed glassnumber in the centre. The panel issecured to a central vertical rod for extra stability.

This number panel was commissioned as a wedding gift and thedetail of the pattern based on a glass lampshade already in the house. The numerals are in a white flashed opalglass, a very pale green glass being used in this area to add interest.

This pair of panels (better photos to come) in a window onthe stairs was in poor condition, and had been partially renovated a few timesin the past (the various kinds of uncoloured glass that have been used over theyears are visible, as are some of the ‘strap’ repairs – it was decided to re-usethe broken pieces under these, rather than cut new glass, to keep the panel asoriginal as possible.. Our clients werehaving all their windows replaced by factory made timber windows and were anxious toretain these leaded panels. We removedthem, disassembled, cleaned, and rebuilt with new lead, to a size agreed withthe window company, who installed them.

This pair of leaded glass door panels are based on otherglass in the property, adjusting the colours to maximise the light. They have support bars installed into theframe on the inside to which the panels are secured for extra stability.

We also supplied and fitted the sandblasted panel over thedoor with the number. Laminated glasswas used for extra strength.

Coloured glass door restoration, Streatham

Our clients were decorating the whole of the front of theirhouse, and when it came to the door set there was a lot to do!

The diamond leaded side panel was very loose, and need to beremoved and re-leaded.

The centrepiece in the door had been lost and replaced withan ugly substitute, not reflecting the original at all. We used the original design from surroundingdoors as the basis for a slightly simpler design, made in Muranese patternglass, similar to that in the 12 smaller panels.

The lead in these smaller panels had all been painted gold,2 were damaged to the extent they need to be rebuilt, and all the othersremoved, the gold paint stripped off, and the panels re-cemented and polished.

We made and fitted a new centrepiece to the same pattern asthe original,
copied from the neighbouring house, using uncoloured English Muffle glass.

We tried to ensure the texture and colour in the new piecewere sympathetic to the rest of the glass in the door.

Our client’s apartment in a converted warehouse complex already had a number of leaded panels filling the semi-circles at the top of the tall windows. Recent remodelling meant that 3 new ones were required, to provide privacy in a newly formed bedroom, and to complete the set in the kitchen. We prepared one identical to the existing, and a pair of variant designs for the bedroom. The panels were usual in that they used thick lenses (the green circles) and 'gluechip' glass.

The traditionally painted glass centre piece of a panel set to the side of the door had become damaged – our client diligently collected all the shards, which meant the painter was able to execute a close copy of the painted and stained glass pattern. The painted piece was then inserted into the rest of the panel and re installed, in July 2011.

The glass in one of these panels was very loose in the lead and the others had various cracked pieces. All 4 were removed and the opening boarded over, the loose panel disassembled and remade with new lead, and new pieces of glass inserted to replace the broken glass in the others. They were then all re-cemented and polished and fitted with all new beading, with steel support bars n the main panels, which had been omitted from the previous installation. In addition the old and not very attractive leaded ‘lancet’ panels at the sides were replaced with laminated white diffuser glass.

Three out of the 4 lower leaded light panels in this set had cracked or missing pieces, and they were generally in rather shaky condition. The clients had decided for security reasons they wanted safety glass fitted to the outside. We measured, and returned and fitted the necessary 6.4mm thick laminated safety glass, having removed the 4 leaded panels to the workshop for repairs. As well as replacing the damaged pieces the panels were re-cemented and polished, then fitted with steel retaining bars, behind the laminated glass.

Our client in West Dulwich wanted a new stained glass panel for the fanlight above the front door, to be in keeping with the glass in the 2 main door panels. We visited to measure and photograph the exiting, noting the glass used previously. The brief included the possibility of simplifying the pattern somewhat in the interests of economy. We matched a number of the types of glass with the original since the panels were relatively new and the glass still in production. We were pleased to hear that ‘the door looks great now!’

The 2 main panels had become loose with age, and some of the uncoloured glass damaged. Although, in common with many patterns, the glass was no longer made we had a very close match from salvaged glass. They were disassembled, the glass washed, remade and fitted, secured to new steel support bars.

Removed, boarded over, rebuilt and fitted after damage. We were able to match some of the existing glass (small Flemish) from currently made stock, and other from salvaged glass. Somewhat unusual in that it uses wider lead than usual in the main parts of the design, a feature repeated in other glass in the building.

We proposed a number of designs, and this was selected.

There are 2 sets to be mounted in adjacent, existing steel framed high level windows, originally glazed with uncoloured textured glass.

You can see the problem! It might not have been quite so bad if, when the panel was originally fitted, a steel supporting bar had been used, and the panel secured to it by wires.

We removed the panel and boarded it over, took it back to the workshop, disassembled, it, cut new glass to replace the broken pieces, and then remade it with new lead. We fitted it with the steel bar!

Completed in March 2011.

This panel, one of a set with similar motifs, said to be locally linked, had become very bowed, to the extent that one of the narrow borders around the shield was cracked and one of the painted pieces was about to drop out. The panel was removed, and the opening boarded over for security, then disassembled and the glass pieces washed. It was then reassembled with new lead, and fitted.

Stained glass door panel – West Norwood, SE25

This panel was a gift from daughter to mother, after the original rather plain leaded door panel came to the end of its life. Our clients, with whom we met several times during the course of the project, identified this pattern themselves, which we then set in an appropriate border. The border and the background (which is in fact a very pale amber) are in English Muffle glass. Fitted in December 2010.

This panel, which had at some point been remade from the original pattern, using different glass, had become damaged. It wasn’t possible to match the uncoloured glass, since its not been made for many years. Rather than use non-matching glass to replace the broken clear pieces, it was decided to replace all the clear glass, and to use a texture that more closely resembled that in the adjacent stained glass door. Fitted in December 2010.

This door panel had become very unstable with age, and came apart as it was removed from the door, prior to boarding over, although there were almost no broken pieces. It was taken apart, the glass was, and made up into a panel again with new lead, such that it was restored to its condition when originally fitted. Completed in November 2010.

The bottom section of this large landing window had become damaged - someone tripped on the stairs and fell into it - the window collapsed outwards under the impact, and although it suffered badly there was no serious damage to the person.

Rather than remove the whole large panel of leaded glass, we were able to just cut out the damaged section, rebuild it in the workshop, and install - some of the glass has been out of production for years, but we were able to match it from material salvaged from other glass restoration projects.

These 2 sets of leaded panels were very deteriorated with age - the cement that holds the glass into the lead having broken down, causing the glass to become loose and the panels floppy, as well as there being a number of fractured joints. The 12 leaded panels were completely taken apart, the glass cleaned, and a number of non-matching pieces from previous repairs replaced with glass closer to the original. They were then remade with new lead, for the client's contractor to fit. Supplied in October 2010

Stained glass Clapham (Old Town), SW4

Installed at the end of September 2010, these are 2 new door panels to replace 1970s textured solid glass panels, and a rebuilt top panel, which had been subject to prior restoration, but was becoming unstable. The pattern was copied from the neighbouring houses - we did suggest some design changes, but in the end the view was taken to be consistent with the rest of the street. Each of the 3 panels is supported by 2 steel retaining bars, and the panels held to these with copper tie-wires, soldered to the lead. This is important in providing stability to the panels, promoting greater durability.

One of our regular property maintenance clients had removed the original of this panel, which had suffered damage such that it really wasn't worth attempting a repair or rebuild, particularly since the panel itself was not original, and the decision was taken to start again, with a new pattern closely based on the original.

A quite simple but effective set of panels, with a pale green border, to meet our client's requirement to have the house number in the door (as do other houses in the street) but without too much complexity. This pair of panels were fitted in an outer porch door in July 2010. The door had solid panels and when closed provided no light to the hall. We arranged for the panels to be cut out, taking great care to ensure that the detailed moulding (a bolection moulding) around them on the outside was kept intact and the integrity of the door retained. We the fitted laminated glass into the openings for security, and the new leaded panels fitted behind these.

This panel, part of a set making up a large landing window that had been extensively damaged during a break-in, had to be comprehensively restored. We were provide, with just a small remaining section (itself very cracked), a few other glass pieces, and a rubbing the client had made of the pattern from one of the other panels. This was sufficient to replicate this Frank Lloyd-Wright type design.

Fortunately we were able to match the damaged glass from our small stock of salvaged pieces. We also matched the lead, which was narrower than that commonly used, thus helping keep some of the simple delicacy of the original. Completed July 2010.

Hand made glass leaded lights

This pair of panels is made using hand-made glass (known as 'antique') - which is considerably more costly than the more commonly used machine or semi-machine made art glasses. Apart from the far more varied surface and the presence of small bubbles (seeds), the thickness of the glass varies, introducing subtle changes in colour, within the same piece of glass. This glass was fitted in June 2010 in an old Kentish farm house, which was undergoing extensive renovation. The brief was to produce some feature panels, whilst remaining sympathetic to the age of the building - hence the choice of this type of glass which is made in the ancient manner.
Its interesting to note the differences in the appearance of the glass, against a neutral background, and from each side in the finished installation.

The sandblasted work shown in the previous post, which is based on the badge of the original builders of the house, and which is present on the exterior walls can also be seen here, along with the Roman numerals for 2010, acknowledging the current restoration.
This was created by being re-drawn by an artist from a photograph of the original badge, scanning the drawing, cutting a plastic film 'resist', which is then applied to the glass prior to sandblasting

Restored stained glass - Balham

This pair of panels, which had been partly restored in the past, had suffered bowing and a few broken pieces - mainly because they were inadequately retained in the door. Previous work had replaced one of the painted birds (presumably broken) with a plain disc of glass We were asked to restore the panels, and make them more secure. A new bird was provided and the panels partly disassembled and then re-leaded. They were refitted in June 2010 behind panels of laminated safety glass.

Installation of leaded panels behind laminated safety glass affords much greater security, since it is almost impossible to penetrate. It also provides protection to the leaded panel, particularly for busy households. If installed on the outside – providing maximum deterrent factor, the outer sheet of glass means that the external appearance particularly in daylight is different to an unprotected panel due to reflections.The appearance from the inside is unaffected. Some clients decide that they prefer the unprotected option, whist others are happy to accept the look, given the security provided; the unchanged appearance from the inside, and that at night the internal lighting, usually from the hall, tends to overcome the reflections, which are quite visible in this shot.

These 3 leaded glass panels were fitted behind the clear glass already present in the doors and side panles - this was possible because the rebates had sufficient depth. The house number was fitted in a panel above the door and was produced as a sandblasted (an effect similar to etching) panel. Fitted June 2010.

Actually its not 'etched' - it's sandblasted - a 'resist' of adhesive film is produced with the desired pattern cut out and this is then applied to the glass - in this case to 6.4mm clear laminated safety glass. It's then subject to a stream of 'sand' fired at it in an air-jet. The effect is similar to acid-etching. The sandblasted surface is then treated to help stop dirt accumulating. All manner of patterns may be produced on glass in this way.

We made 2 sets, each of 4 panels sets for contractors refurbishing a London House, where there was a requirement to copy the original glass, for installation into new frames, which are around 2.0 x 0.45m, with a Gothic arched top. Contractors made the frames and provided templates, and undertook the installation, which includes fitting of double glazed units into each frame. We achieved a good match for the colours, and the red inner border reproduces the colour variations in the original panels through the use of top quality French 'antique' red flashed glass.

This pair of leaded panels installed in Peckham - East Dulwich replace a pair of plain leaded lights in a fomer bakery, now converted into a home. There is quite a mixture of different types of glass, and the 2 panels are unified by the plain red innder border. The 4 cobalt blue roundels add extra interest, and the 2 panels aren't exactly symetrical...

Traditional blue stars and red glass bordered door

This is a very traditional look, where the different pieces of glass are usually separated by wooden glazing bars, which are integral with the door. In this example there were no such bars, so an outer panel of plain toughened glass was fitted into the opening first for support. The decorative panel, made up of a clear toughend glass centre, red border strips and the blue/clear stars, separated and retained by the lead work was then fitted next to the outer panel. The stars (also available in red) are made from clear glass with a very thin layer of colour fused onto one side, which is then cut back with a wheel, and polished (in a similar way to a crystal glass) to reveal the star pattern.

To complement the clients' new lighting, this sea/sky panel using mainly Corella and Spectrum Waterglass, with a deliberate mixture of lead widths replaced a plain glass panel above the front door. The old glass was removed and a double glazed sealed unit installed in the opening. The new leaded panel was then fitted next to this, and secured with new beading.

Stockwell - Leaded door and fanlight set

This set replaced plain glass in the fanlight and plain etched glass in the door, with a pattern produce from one suggested by the clients. We considered a purple/lavendar colour scheme for the flowers and buds, but settled on the red/pink for greater impact.

Herne Hill Replica Stained Glass

Well, its almost a replica - we modified the pattern for the central panel slightly, but the main motif in the door and the side panels are faithfull to the patterns in neighbouring properties. There is a mixture of glass, with the uncoloured being English Muffle. 6 and 8mm wide lead is used. Blackheath Leaded Glass Panels

This pair of panels was fitted in time for Christmas 2009, for a client for whom we had worked previously. We like the double border, which gives good definition to the panels, which are made mainly in the pastel tints of English Muffle glass. Waterglass is sued for the amber petals of the central flowers.

'Mackintosh' leaded glass in Reigate

This delicate panel was fitted in December 2009 in the client's new oak door. It uses three quite different colours and types of red/pink glass, and the background is made from clear Corella. We've used both 5mm and 6mm wide lead to provide more delicacy to the detail of the rose.

'Mondrian' leaded panel with double glazing

Fitted in December 2009, as the Copenhagen climate summit was going on, this panel was installed with a double glazed sealed unit (dgsu), at the client's request.

The leaded panel is fitted as normal, to the outside of the opening, and sealed in. The dgsu was then mounted next to the leaded panel from the hall side, the two panels separated by a black foam sealing strip, the whole being retained with new timber beading.

The pictures were taken at the same time, demonstrating the effect of the position of the light - the first one, looking out into the relatively bright street, and the second looking in to the darker hall.

Dulwich Village stained glass, December 2009

Great colours! This panel was fitted in an inner hall door - its quite large - around 750mm square - and had originally been made with particularly heavy lead - and installed with no supporting stucture of any kind. It had begun to collapse in the centre, and a couple of pieces of glass were lost. There were also some rather unsympathetic pieces of glass in the pattern, maybe from previous repairs. We removed the panel, stripped it down, cleaned the glass, cut new to replace the lost pieces and those the client decided to change. We reassembled with a lighter lead to reduce the weight, and fitted behind a panel of laminated safety glass for support with a retaining bar on the other side.

Rebuilt leaded panels - Croydon and Sydenham

Both these panels are one of a pair, the first one from Croydon and the second from Sydenham. They were also both set in the door nearest the opening edge, the lock side - which is always more subject to wear and tear - and whilst their twins remained in fair condition these 2 had suffered, necessitating removal, boarding over the opening, disassembly of the panels and remaking with all new lead, replacing the broken glass with the best match we had.

Art Deco style leaded glass

This uncoloured panel was produced from a clients idea, for him to install in a building under restoration. Its made up from 2 kinds of clear glass - Corella (main cental pieces and small edge pieces) and English Muffle (main border and central strip), using white flashed opal glass for the 3 triangular pieces. Overall size is around 610x570mm.

Balham Door Set November 2009

RK Joinery in Balham with whom we work from time to time were asked by a local client to make 2 original pattern doors for adjacent maisonettes. Peter at RK then asked us to design and produce the 2 sets of leaded panels - 26 pieces in all, which he then fitted, behind panels of laminated glass for additional security. We hope to provide a picture of the doors with the glass shortly.

London, SE1, leaded hall doors

This pair of unusual leaded panels are based around a stylised beetle design, and created for the artist who originated the pattern.

They are made from strongly textured uncoloured irridised glass (Spectrum Baroque), and a 'wispy' grey/pink. The irridised glass changes appearance depending on the ambient light and viewing angle.

Bromley abstract stained glass

We were asked to re-create a window that had been comprehensively damaged in an attempted break-in. Virtually all of the glass was broken, and mostly lost. We were able to establish the abstract pattern from the remains of the lead, and use our judgement, with the client, to determine the glass to be used. As with most deliberate (and usually accidental) damage, the costs were covered by insurance.

Beckenham leaded glass

A simple but effective design to introduce a feature into a dark-ish hall-way, replacing a plain leaded light. Size around 0.5 x 1.0m. Fitted with a panel of laminated safety glass to the outside for protection. Our client, with whom we worked to carefully select the glass to be used, said it was 'fantastic' and that seeing it 'made her day!'

Bromley - leaded front door set

Installed September 2009, this set of 3 leaded panels replace a former (but possibly not original,) set in plain 'bobble' or pebble glass, where the centre circle had become badly bowed. They are in clear English Muffle glass with the amber strip in Corella, the high lights using ruby red Spectrum 'granite', rough rolled 'grape' from the same glass maker and a green from Wissmach.

These shots from the inside show the vertical strengthening bars, which do cross the pattern, however this is less obvious from the outside, and will be important to prevent bowing of this new panel.

The shadows are from the porch, which is not original to the house.

Leaded glass panel - Wapping, London, E1

Large (1.6 x 0.5m) internal panel, mounted behind 6.4mm laminated glass for safety and durability.
Installed August 2009.

Uses clear Corella glass with English Muffle glass high lights with Sahara glass central strip. 8, 10 and 12mm wide lead used in the body of the panel, with internal steel reinforcement and 2 steel bars fitted to prevent bowing out of the opening.

Dulwich - New leaded glass door set

Fitted August 2009. The client's contractor has arranged for the missing timber glazing bars that divide the main space into the central octagon and 4 corner panels to be reinstated in the door. The leaded panels were then made from templates. The patterns include hand-spun glass roundels in dark violet glass.

Croydon stained glass

Installed August 2009. Here we made a new centre panel - with the 2 doves, and several new border pieces. Previous the original leaded panels had been replaced with plain glass.

These 3 views - from the inside looking out, from the outside, and pre-installation against a difusing background, show just how variable the appearance of the same glass is under different conditions of light.

We particulaly like the aquamarine 'waterglass' in the centre, which is streaked with blue.

It is retained with 2 horizontal square section saddle bars.
